Château Le Bon Pasteur: Vineyards
The little hamlet of Maillet is a small collection of buildings lying in the north-eastern corner of the Pomerol appellation, about as far from Libourne and Catusseau you can get without straying into Lalande-de-Pomerol or St Emilion. It is thus on the edge of the appellation, on the slope and sand adjacent to the Barbanne. To the west, along the Chemin de Chantecaille, lie Château Gazin, Château Lafleur-Gazin, Château La Fleur-Petrus, Château Le Gay and Château Rouget, some of which – depending which side of the road the vineyards lie – have very similar terroir, influenced by the course of the nearby river.
To the east and south, meanwhile, are the vineyards of St Emilion, in particular the Corbin sector. Almost directly south is Château Croque-Michotte, and further along the same road Château Grand-Corbin-Despagne, Château Grand Corbin, Château Corbin and Château Grand-Corbin-Manuel.
The Bon Pasteur vineyards amount to 6.62 hectares, scattered across 21 parcels, some of which are miniscule, a tiny fraction of a hectare. It is thus difficult to generalise about how the terroir varies across the domaine as we might do for Château Le Gay or Château Lafleur-Gazin.
