Château Petit Village: The Buidin-Buffin Era

The property then came into the hands of the Buidin-Buffin family, as evidenced by the 1874 edition of Cocks et Féret which lists them as proprietors. I have already described this family in some detail in my profile of Château Taillefer; the Buidin family were local négociants and proprietors, while the Buffin family originated in Saint-Omer, a small commune in northern France, not far from Calais. The two came together with the marriage of Honoré Constant Joseph Buidin (born 1781) to Marie Caroline Scholastique Buffin (born 1779) on February 12th 1807. Together they had four children, three daughters and a son, the latter named Elie Louis Hyacinthe Buidin, who first saw the day in 1814. He was born in Saint-Omer, and he was still living there in 1842, when Château Petit Village was in the possession of either the Dufresnes or de Seguin families.

By the 1860s the family had moved, Honoré and Marie were living at Château Taillefer, which Elie and his wife Hyacinthe then inherited after Honoré died in 1865. As a consequence the younger Buidin-Buffins lived at Taillefer from 1866 onwards. Documents concerning Elie make clear that he was a propriétaire and not just a négociant, so he was clearly associated with the running of the estate and its vineyards. It was presumably Elie who made the purchased of Château Petit Village, some time before 1874, although it may have been his father.
