Château Mangot: Vineyards
Château Mangot is located in the commune of Saint-Etienne-de-Lisse, in the eastern periphery of the St Emilion appellation. As with a number of other 2022 St Emilion classification promotions, it is surrounded by famous names. The château, which is hidden from view by a dense copse of trees, and the cellars, which occupy a more prominent position looking out onto the road, sit on the côtes, directly contiguous with the Silvio Denz Faugères ‘trio’, namely Château Faugères and Château Péby Faugères to the south-west, and Château Cap de Faugères (in the Côtes de Bordeaux Castillon appellation) directly south. Meanwhile, sitting in a crescent around the property, on the edge of the plateau, we find Château de Pressac, Château Valandraud, Château Fleur Cardinale and Château Poesia. This is a pretty smart neighbourhood!
The reconstituted vineyard of Château Mangot boasts 34 hectares of vines, on an estate covering 37 hectares in total. The vineyards spread out around the property, which means they extend up and down the slopes, including some parcels running up on to the plateau, offering a number of different terroirs. Some of the vineyards on the slopes are fashioned into long terraces. In all cases the soils underfoot feature limestone, in particular the famed Calcaire à Astéries, with varying amounts of clay. The vines are divided into 21 separate parcels, ranging from 35 to 86 metres above sea level.
