Château La Pointe: The 20th Century

Château La Pointe was purchased by Louis Charles Montouroy (1851 – 1941), a Libourne négociant, in 1907. Presumably he acquired it from the Grandet family, although this is not certain. The 1908 edition of Cocks et Féret tells us that by this date the estate was in his possession, and the vineyard had grown somewhat, as it was up to 20 hectares. Correspondingly, production had also increased, and although the annual average was 60 tonneaux it varied from 44 to 109 tonneaux per annum.

Little else seems to be known of Montouroy’s tenure of this estate. Parish records indicate that he had married on May 24th 1884, in Libourne, to Marie Marguerite Fromant (1820 – 1923). Charles and Marie went on to have four daughters and three sons, all born before his acquisition of Château La Pointe. The eldest of the seven siblings was Suzanne Montouroy (1885 – 1889) and the youngest was Marie Jeanne Denise (1894 – 1897). The family were resident in Libourne by the 1920s, but in 1935 records show Charles was resident at Château La Pointe. It is doubtful that he changed much on the estate, as the vineyard was already by this time very close in size to its current state.
