Château La Fleur-Pétrus: Vineyards
As I have just concluded, the original Château La Fleur-Pétrus is located close to the Barbanne, where the soil turns sandy and slopes down to the river. Its peers were those estates that occupy a similar position in this locale, including Château Rouget and Château Le Gay to the west, as well as Château Lafleur-Gazin and Château Gazin to the east. Today, however, we must learn instead to think of Château La Fleur-Pétrus as being much more central, the vineyards positioned around what was once Château La Providence. This takes our minds away from the Barbanne and its sandy slopes, which is perhaps appropriate, simply because the majority of the La Fleur-Pétrus vines are today situated on the plateau.
The Château La Fleur-Pétrus vineyard today covers approximately 18.7 hectares, somewhat larger than it was in the Constant era when it amounted to only 9.1 hectares. This expansion is firstly down to the aforementioned Le Gay acquisition in 1994, which took it beyond 12 hectares, then the Guillot parcel took it past 14 hectares, and the absorption of 4 hectares from Providence has taken it to the current figure.
