Château Guillot-Clauzel: Vineyards
This tiny estate is located to the north of Catusseau, upslope from Château Nenin. Indeed, if heading into the village of Catusseau from the direction of Libourne, take the first left after Château Nenin and a few seconds later you will come across a rather anonymous chai on the right-hand side of the road. This is Château Guillot-Clauzel, a dimunitive building, housing both vat room and barrel cellar, to match the diminutive vineyard which surrounds it. Its position part way up this gentle slope is significant. Behind us, to the south, lower down the slope on more sandy soils, is the aforementioned Château Nenin. Continue up the road and you come to the aforementioned Château Trotanoy. Or take a right turn and you immediately stumble upon a Thienpont residence, and behind that Le Pin itself. The domaine really does have some significant neighbours.
In total there are 2.4 hectares planted up, in three main parcels, one opposite the door of the cellars, the others sitting one higher up and one lower down on the slope. The soils here are gravel and clay, more compact on the lower part of the vineyard, with more gravel in the soils than nearby Le Pin, but perhaps less than found at Château Trotanoy. In keeping with the general scheme in Pomerol, the vineyard is mostly Merlot, this variety accounting for 75% of plantings, the remaining 25% Cabernet Franc.
