Château Fayat: Tasting & Drinking

Château Fayat has only been around since the 2009 vintage, and it is still clearly a work in progress. Sections of the vineyard have been replanted, most notably those dedicated to Cabernet Franc. The wine is not overworked though, and I feel the restraint shown in the élevage, with 20% remaining in vat and just 50% new oak used, is appropriate taking into account the mix of terroirs in use here.

The end result can thus be very attractive, particularly so in the 2016 vintage, when I was taken by the wine’s dark and savoury fruit flavours. It was a serious step up from a very attractive 2015 vintage, itself an improvement on the 2014 vintage, which showed a rather perfumed and linear style. There is plenty of appetite for investment and improvement here, with new Cabernet Franc plantings due to come on line as well, and I have no doubt that this is a domaine worth watching in future vintages.
