Château Fayat: Vineyards

The bringing together of these three domaines meant that the newly created Château Fayat had 16 hectares of vines, which for the Pomerol appellation is a particularly expansive vineyard. It is divided into three sections, as described in my profile. The first domaine acquired was Château Prieurs de Commanderie; this is located west of the D1089 which runs along the foot of the Pomerol slope, further west than the tiny village of Le Grand Moulinet. It thus lies just around the corner from Château Montviel, Clos René and Château L’Enclos. The vines here are planted on sandy clay with a superficial layer of fine gravel.

Next to come into the fold, Château Commanderie de Mazeyres is a rather grand domaine which sits even further west than Château Prieurs de Commanderie, being about as close to the waters of the Isle it is possible to get while still in the Pomerol appellation. It is also situated a little further south, rubbing up against the suburbs of the town, while to the north lies Château Mazeyres. For the those who know the area well, it is just opposite the large E LeClerc supermarket on the D910 as it heads north out of town. The vines here are planted on soils that are mostly sandy, perhaps unsurprising this close to the river, but there is some gravel here too. The third and final domaine to be acquired was Vieux Château Bourgneuf, the most obvious landmark for which is the Ronan by Clinet facility near the foot of the Pomerol slope, which sits right next-door, on what I believe is the site of the old château. The soils here are dominated by sand and silt mixed with clay.
