Château La Cabanne: Vineyards

As I have already indicated in my introduction to this profile, Château La Cabanne sits in a prime position on the Pomerol plateau, surrounded by some very famous names. The new chai has a prominent roadside position on the Chemin de la Cabanne, which runs from the D1089 (the main road which heads north-east out of Pomerol, and which marks for us where the plateau begins to rise) to the intersection where Château Certan de May and Vieux Château Certan can be found.

Behind the château is the Chemin les Grandes Vignes, which runs up to the church in Pomerol itself. To the north and east are Château Clinet and Château L’Église-Clinet, while to the south and east is Château Trotanoy. Meanwhile to the west the land gently descends towards the foot of the plateau and the more sandy soils of the appellation.

Most of the Château La Cabanne vineyards, 8.8 hectares in total, are gathered around the chai, and thus enjoy a favourable location. The vines dig their feet into a high-quality soil of clay and gravel, perhaps not the profound gravel seen next-door in the vineyards of Château Trotanoy, where some sections of the vineyard are blanketed with huge lumps of brown gravel, but this is still an admirable terroir. The gravel here is finer, the pebbles overall smaller, dainty even (as pictured), but this soil is still very favourable and it stands to reason that the wine made here should be all we expect of a Pomerol-plateau estate.
