Château Vieux Maillet: Tasting & Drinking
With a vineyard scattered across several sectors of the Pomerol appellation, often with a sandy soil profile rather than the clay and gravel on which the reputation of this appellation rests, it should not be surprise to learn that the wines of Château Vieux Maillet do not occupy the Pomerol top tier. That was not a problem, as the stated aim of Hervé Laviale has always been to make an approachable wine for drinking and enjoying, rather than obsessing over as we might with Petrus and Le Pin. This is of course to be applauded, as the approach was appropriate for the terroir he and his team are working with.
