Château Trotanoy: Vineyards
Château Trotanoy is located on the Pomerol plateau, directly north of the village of Catusseau. It lies sandwiched between the Chemin de la Cabanne on the north side, and the Chemin des Ormeaux to the south. The rather pretty little château sits set back from the road, accessible from the Chemin de Nenin by a driveway of white gravel lined by cypress trees, and surrounded on all four sides by its vineyards. The only aberrant plot is a parcel that lies on the opposite side of the Chemin de Nenin, directly adjacent to the more important of the two parcels that comprise Château La Violette. Other neighbours include Château Latour à Pomerol, Château Hosanna and Providence on the north side, Le Pin close by on the east.
The vineyard on the east side, where it is rich in that dark brown gravel, lies convincingly on the plateau, while towards the west it begins to slope downwards, the beginning of the decline down to the D1089, and the sandy soils that run alongside the Isle. They are some distance away here though, and this slightly lower section of the Trotanoy vineyard is rich in heavy clay. The subsoil contains gravel and sand, and deeper still is the crasse de fer, the rock-hard layer of iron-rich soil which lies beneath many of the vineyards of Pomerol.
