Château de Sales: Paul de Laage de Meux

Paul de Laage de Meux was bequeathed the property and he ran it with Valérie at his side until his death. While viticulture remained an important activity here, various family members carved out careers as tax collectors and magistrates, and thus they regained some of their ‘old money’ prestige and wealth. Business on the estate was good though, and in 1830 Paul would resign as a magistrate, forming the trading company P. Delaage et Cie, which would prove very profitable.

Paul and Valérie had five children, one son and four daughters. The lone son was Alexandre (1831 – 1898), who married Marie Louise Eléonore Vallet de Peyraud (1836 – 1894). The next generation saw another five offspring appear, including two sons, the most relevant to this story being Paul de Laage de Meux (1861 – 1949), the eldest of the two boys and obviously named for his grandfather. He wed Marie Marguerite de Montardy (1865 – 1896), who had two daughters and a son. The latter passed away in 1938 and the property came to one of the daughters, Marie-Simone (1891 – 1947).

Marie-Simone married Henri de Folin (1882 – 1949) on January 31st 1911, the union producing a solitary daughter, Marguerite de Folin (1917 – 1979) who married an army officer named Henri de Lambert (1915 – 2001).
