Clos René: Tasting & Drinking

Although the wines of Clos René have often been on the receiving end of some warm praise, on tasting them I cannot escape the sensation that we are looking at a wine from one of the lesser terroirs of Pomerol here. The wines are plump, full, quite solid in style, with not the energetic definition of a wine from a great, gravelly terroir. They do offer some typicity and character though, as well as good value, something that is not so common among the grander appellations of Bordeaux. And I can see, to some extent at least, what other critics mean when they describe Clos René as reliable; these are friendly, dependable wines.
