Château La Clémence: Vineyards

As I have already hinted in my brief history of Château La Clémence, the cellars are located on the boundary between St Emilion and Pomerol, in the south-western corner of the Pomerol appellation, just to the north of the Ruisseau du Taillas, a stream which runs past Château Figeac and through the suburbs of Libourne before emptying into the Dordogne. Its neighbours to the west therefore include Château Ferrand (the property of this name in Pomerol, not the grand cru classé property of the same name in St Emilion) and Château Taillefer, while to the east they include Château La Tour Figeac and beyond that Château Figeac and Château Cheval Blanc.

There are vines belonging to Château La Clémence around the cellars, but this is only one parcel of six that constitute the domaine’s 2.8 hectares of vines. The multi-parcellated nature of the vineyard provides significant variety in terroir, especially for such a small domaine, with some vines planted on deep gravel, others on sandy soils with characteristic crasse de fer (this is fairly typical of the sandy soils around the cellars), some on red gravel and others on the appellation’s famous blue clay.
