Château Laroze: Vineyards

Château Laroze is located to the west of the town, not far from the D243 that runs directly from the town of St Emilion towards the back of Libourne. The other old Gurchy domaine, now Château Angélus, sits a kilometre or so to the south, but the domaine has other significant neighbours which are situated much closer. Just to the east are Château La Gomerie and Château Franc Mayne, and to the west is Château Yon-Figeac, another old Gurchy property.

Château Laroze

Today the domaine has 27 hectares of vines, a very comparable size to that Georges Gurchy was looking after during the latter 20th century. The vines are rooted in sandy soils which are situated over a deeper clay, and today they are 68% Merlot, 26% Cabernet Franc and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon. Unsurprisingly although the domaine has turned away from biodynamics, the work in the vineyard still respects the soil. The team till the soil to control weeds, cultivate grass between the rows, add organic treatments as required, and they eschew chemical herbicides.
