Château Haut-Sarpe: Tasting & Drinking

The wines of Château Haut-Sarpe tend to be fairly rich and they lean towards the modern in terms of character, brimming with dark berry fruit and on occasion wrapped up in a considerable volume of toasted oak.

The recently encountered 2019 is a good example of this style, attractive and clearly well made, but in need of some time in the cellar during which we will have to cross our fingers that the effects of the oak will diminish with time. It is clearly cut from the same cloth as the 2016 and 2018 vintages before it. Quality is undeniably good though, more so than 2017, a difficult vintage for many in the region, when it seemed to nosedive, the subsance of the wine simply not up to the richly extracted core of tannins.
