Château La Croizille: Vineyards

Château La Croizille is located in St-Laurent-des-Combes, teetering on the edge of the St Emilion plateau. Right next-door, up the slope, is the other de Schepper property Château Tour Baladoz. Meanwhile, further down the road which ascends the plateau sit Château Godeau and Château de Candale. Perhaps of more significance, just along and across the plateau near neighbours include the renowned Château Tertre-Roteboeuf, Château Rochebelle, La Mondotte and Château Troplong-Mondot, none of which are to be sniffed at.

The location of the cellars, right on the edge of the limestone plateau, affords visitors fabulous views across the local vineyards from the tasting room. The vines of Château La Croizille sit directly beneath the cellars on the slopes, including some vines on a small run of terraces. There are just 5.05 hectares of vines in total, aged 35 years on average, and planted at a density of 6,100 vines per hectare. The vineyard planting scheme is dominated by Merlot, at 85% of the total, and although many writers make a great deal of the role Cabernet Sauvignon plays here this pertains more to the blends than the vineyard, where it accounts for 10% of the plantings, with 5% Cabernet Franc.
