Clos des Jacobins: Vineyards

Clos des Jacobins is located at the side of the road running west out of St Emilion towards Libourne and Pomerol. As described in my profile its origins lie in the 19th century, when a slice was carved from the vineyards of Château Franc-Mayne, and so it should come as no surprise to learn that the vineyards of these two estates are contiguous. Those of Château Franc-Mayne lie to the east and south of Clos des Jacobins, while Château Grand Mayne also lies to the south. To the west is Château Laroze, Château La Grace Dieu and Château La Grace Dieu Les Menuts. On the other side of the St Emilion-Libourne road there are a number of less well-known domaines, although behind those Château Côte de Baleau can be found.

The vineyards of Clos des Jacobins amount to just 8.5 hectares, the terroir typical of the pieds de côtes, with a mix of loose limestone and clay, the latter dominating in the lower sections. The vines are 80% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Franc and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon, with an average age of approximately 30 years. The planting density is 8,500 vines per hectare, evidence of recent planting, a high-density arrangement such as this being a modern phenomenon. The work in the vineyard is conventional, with no certification in organic or biodynamic viticulture.
