Château Clos de Sarpe: Tasting & Drinking

The volume of production of Château Clos de Sarpe is very small, so this estate tends to maintain a very low profile. With only 10,000 bottles per annum, only a proportion of which wear the grand vin’s label, these are not wines which are frequently encountered.

With very low yields, closer to 14 hl/ha than 24 hl/ha in some vintages, a modern approach to vinification and a long élevage in nothing but new oak, it should come as no surprise to learn that the style here is rather modern. It is certainly an admirable style, with 2016 and 2015 being two recent successful vintages. I also thought the 2017 very good, the tiny vineyard having clearly escaped the worst of the frost which hit the region in spring that year. (27/2/19)
