Château Cantelys: Vineyards

Château Cantelys is located in the commune of Martillac, just over 2 kilometres south of Château Smith-Haut-Lafitte; between the two Cathiard properties sits Château de Rochemorin, which has for many years been in the hands of Vignobles André Lurton. This property, and Château Cantelys, thereby have some common history. To the east of the estate sits the town of Martillac itself, and Château Latour-Martillac, while to the south and west the land is mostly dedicated to forestry, or is uncultivated.

The vineyard is spread over just 20 hectares; of these, 15 hectares are planted to red varieties. Although the wine is consistently a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, I believe the vineyard is planted to 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. I provide more detail on this apparent mismatch further down the page. The other 5 hectares are therefore planted to white varieties, these being 45% Sauvignon Blanc, 45% Semillon and 10% Muscadelle. Overall, the vines are aged 25 years on average. Beyond the vines, the estate is mostly surrounded by woodland and scrub.
