Château Cantelys: Tasting & Drinking
Looking back to the wines made by Fabien Teitgen, before Château Cantelys changed hands, a number of vintages I tasted here were of interest, and my preferences tended to reflect the colour of the wine – white or red – as well as the character of the vintage. Looking at the reds first, the 2016 was particularly impressive, surely one of the best red wines made here ever, a reflection of the strength of this vintage in the region, but both 2020 and 2019 were also strong, followed by 2018.
In whites, meanwhile, I preferred the 2020 and 2019 vintages, these being years in which the wines have a touch more freshness than 2018. The 2021 was also convincing, certainly more so than the red that year. These are wines which will only require a year or two in the cellar to compose themselves before they are will be ready for drinking.
Of course, Fabien is no longer making the wines here, this responsibility having now been passed in 2022 to a team from Grands Chais de France. I will watch with interest to see what unfolds, but a taste of the 2023 vintage as a barrel sample was certainly reassuring. (1/9/21, updated 19/5/24)
