Domaine de la Solitude: Vineyards
The domaine is located in the commune of Martillac, not that far from Domaine de Chevalier, which lies to the west. Other domaines closer to hand include Château Mirebeau to the north, Château Haut-Lagrange, to the northwest, and Château Lespault-Martillac, also managed by Olivier Bernard, just to the east. The vineyard is extensive, much more so than it was historically, and it now covers 32 hectares of the Pessac-Léognan appellation.
There are a number of similarities between Domaine de la Solitude and Domaine de Chevalier. The soils are certainly similar, being dominated by gravel, even if those at Domaine de la Solitude (pictured) are somewhat more sandy in composition than those at Domaine de Chevalier. Local influences on climate are also the same, both estates being largely surrounded by woodland which protects the vines from extreme weather, but which can of course also exacerbate the development of frost pockets. Anti-frost measures, such as the éolienne (pictured further down the page) have been installed here as at Domaine de Chevalier.
