Bordeaux 2000: Tasting in 2023

What was the most memorable moment of the year 2000?

Was it the extreme sense of relief during the first few minutes of January 1st, as the reverberations of the New Year bells began to fade, that the Millennium Bug turned out to be a much lesser risk than anticipated (or, if you’re a programmer, was successfully mitigated), and the world did not self-destruct as a consequence of some rogue dates?

Or was it the announcement to the world on June 26th, made jointly by US president Bill Clinton and UK prime minister Tony Blair, that the Human Genome Project had completed the first draft of our genetic code, heralding a new era of science and technology in healthcare?

Or perhaps it was the launch of Soyuz TM-31 on October 31st, carrying the first resident crew to the International Space Station, an orbiting laboratory and one of mankind’s most remarkable scientific achievements, and which has been continuously manned ever since?

No, of course not. You and I both know the most memorable moment of this millennial year was when the Bordelais announced – and for once nobody could argue with them – that 2000 was the Vintage of the Century.
