Château Suau: Vineyards

Château Suau occupies a fairly easterly position in the Barsac appellation, situated extraordinarily close to the waters of the Garonne. The banks of the river are a mere 800 metres to the east, and the vines, which run down in front of the château in the direction of the river, are even closer. The image on the preceding page serves as evidence of this; the church in the distance is that of Sainte-Croix-du-Mont, which sits atop the limestone escarpment on the opposite bank of the Garonne.

Despite this prominent location, Château Suau appears to create a great deal of confusion for many, including some commentators on the Bordeaux region, perhaps reflecting a lack of familiarity with the property, which may have resulted from its apparent absence from the market for many years. And perhaps the fact they have never visited the estate. Many confuse it with another Château Suau, located in Capian, on the opposite bank of the Garonne, in the Cadillac Côtes de Bordeaux appellation. This is an entirely different property though, one which was until recently owned by the Bonnet family, before they sold it to Bacchus Investments. Despite this clear distinction in location, appellation and ownership, I regularly see images of this other property presented as the Château Suau in Barsac, not only on popular online search engines and mapping sites, but even on specialist Bordeaux-focused wine sites.
