Château de Rochemorin: Tasting & Drinking

The wines of Château de Rochemorin provide an affordable and high-quality route into the world of Pessac-Léognan, and are among the most reliable wines of those properties not included within the ranks of the Graves classification. It was of course not possible for the property to be included in such a classification, given that viticulture had been abandoned on the property at the time the classification was being drawn up during the 1950s.

I find the white wine pique my interest more than the red. In favourable vintages it tends towards a refreshing and correct style, and it has the advantage of being quite widely distributed at a fair price. Give that it only takes three or four years in bottle for the wine to truly shine, it can be a good purchase for those not wanting to wait decades for their cellar to mature. The reds are also very good, but like all reds of the region need longer in bottle to demonstrate their worth. Nevertheless, the wine certainly has value on its side, and is always worth considering.

My tasting knowledge of the second wines, and of the pure Petit Verdot cuvée, can be written on the back of a proverbial postage stamp.

Below I present my notes on a number of vintages of this estate’s wines, tasted at various moments over the past twenty-or-so years. (29/10/25)
