Château Nairac: Tasting & Drinking

The style of wine made at Château Nairac is undoubtedly a rich one; it still has the fresh and vibrant acidity that characterises Barsac, but despite this there is also plenty of structure and character, and sometimes a little heady, luscious viscosity. Certainly the 1989 showed a lot of this sort of character. More recent vintages have shown a little more raciness, a little more elegance, and are perhaps therefore more readily identifiable as Barsac, but they still have the voluptuous streak added to the mix.

The wines demonstrated improvement throughout the 1990s, with continued rises in quality in the early years of the 21st century. Nairac is no longer simply luscious and rich, but is now also refined, more precise, and more elegant. It is a remarkable achievement considering just a few decades ago the estate was in near ruins. Credit to the Heeter-Tari family, in particular Nicolas Heeter-Tari, for that.
