Château Le Thil Comte Clary: Tasting & Drinking
The wines of Château Le Thil Comte Clary are, as I would expect from Fabien Teitgen’s hand, exceptionally good. Taking this judgement in context, we have to bear in mind that the soils are atypical for the appellation, the choice of varieties planted are unusual, and the vineyard has seen a fair degree of reorganisation since the property was taken on by the Cathiards. The wine has been 100% Merlot in several vintages, with Cabernet Franc only making an appearance as the vines began to produce good volumes, starting with the 2018 vintage. The style is focused and elegant, certainly not at the level of Château Smith-Haut-Lafitte, but of course the terroir would probably not permit that anyway. The price, though, reflects this, and considering who makes the wines they do represent good value. (4/3/21)
