Clos Haut-Peyraguey: Vineyards

As one might suppose from story of this château the buildings here are modest and unprepossessing, being of more recent construction than its Medieval, castellated neighbour Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey. They are situated with the vines atop the Bommes plateau, the altitude of the vineyards ranging from 50 to 80 metres. The Pauly family owned approximately 17 hectares in total, of which 12 hectares were from the original Clos Haut-Peyraguey estate, while the remaining 5 hectares were part of Château Haut-Bommes, a quite separate estate. The Clos Haut-Peyraguey vineyard was divided into two principal parts, 8 hectares in a clos around the cellar, and the 4-hectare plot acquired by Garbay which lies close to Château d’Yquem. In addition there are also two much smaller plots within sight of Château La Tour Blanche.

As I have already mentioned in my introduction, under Bernard Magrez the vineyard has seen some significant developments. The addition of new parcels, especially the 5 hectares of vines from Château Latrezotte, has brought the modern-day vineyard up to 21 hectares. Today the 8 hectares around the cellars, in the original clos, are earmarked for the grand vin, while more distant parcels, including the Haut-Bommes and Latrezotte vineyards, are utilised for the second wine.
