Château Cantegril: Tasting & Drinking

The wines of Château Cantegril are certainly of good quality, and are very typical of the Barsac appellation. These are not the more voluptuous expression of the appellation that is perhaps more commonly encountered though. The wines have a tense, minerally, reserved cut to them which speaks of the limestone bedrock that can be found here, the fruit perhaps aided in its expression of this terroir by the rather reserved used of new oak, and an élevage which is divided between wood and steel. I would say it may also reflect the strong presence of Sauvignon Blanc here, although the rather generous proportion present in the vineyard (35%) does not tend to translate through into the wine (usually 5%, although it has been as high as 12% in one or two recent vintages).
