A Visit to Denis Dubourdieu, 2015: The Dubourdieu Portfolio
The five Dubourdieu domaines have between them 130 hectares of vineyard, mainly focused around Graves and neighbouring appellations such as Barsac. The Dubourdieu philosophy, which is replicated across all five domaines, includes working the soil and thus total avoidance of chemical herbicides, fertilisation using only organic compost, and carrying out much of the vineyard work including trellising, leaf-plucking and green harvesting by hand. The domaines all have ISO 14001 environmental certification.
Before coming to my tasting of some recent releases from Denis Dubourdieu and family, I provide here a brief outline of each of the five domaines.
Boasting an imposing neoclassical château built in the mid-19th century, Château Reynon sits at the side of the road as it climbs up the limestone scarp above the town of Cadillac and the Garonne, and thus the wines have the generic Bordeaux and Cadillac Côtes de Bordeaux appellations. The domaine dates to at least the 15th century, when it was known as Château de Béguey.
