Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion: Tasting & Drinking
The wines of Château Carmes Haut-Brion are not short of their admirers and perhaps this, as well as the Bordeaux bubble generally, is responsible for the rise in prices which is particularly noticeable with the most recent vintages from this estate. With a new owner pouring in investment, this trend is not going to reverse. I unfortunately do not have the tasting experience of older vintages to comment on the appropriateness of these price rises, having sampled only very recent vintages, nevertheless I find good quality here, and readily confess to being a long-term admirer of the wines of Les Carmes Haut-Brion.
How things will change under this new direction, and with the vineyard having more than trebled in size (although with most fruit destined for the second label, admittedly), as yet remain to be seen. I relish the thought of further opportunities to taste Les Carmes Haut-Brion in future vintages, to see how the estate develops under the tenure of its latest proprietor, Patrice Pichet. Despite initial concerns immediately after his purchase, the future for Les Carmes is looking rather bright. (18/9/07, updated 16/9/12, 16/3/13, 7/9/13)
