Château Pouget: Tasting & Drinking
Château Pouget is one of those long-lost domaines of the 1855 classification, along with Château Pédesclaux, Château Boyd-Cantenac, Château Belgrave and perhaps a few others. They are secreted among long lists of fourth or fifth growth châteaux, and overthe years they have tended to maintain a remarkably low profile considering their historical achievements. The reasons for this differ, but in the case of Château Pouget and Château Boyd-Cantenac, it reflects the fact that neither are members of the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux. The decision to withdraw from the Union’s activities was taken by Lucien Guillemet’s father, and when I last met Lucien I asked whether he would consider joining once again. The answer was nothing less than ambivalent, and I can only assume that he and his two châteaux are doing quite well without the Union’s support.
