Château Pouget: Vineyards
Château Pouget is located just to the south of the village of Cantenac, just across the road from Château Boyd-Cantenac. Being so close to this famed village there are of course numerous other estates nearby, not least Château Kirwan just to the north, while the cellars of Château Desmirail are located within the village, and Château d’Issan is just on the far side. To the south is a stretch of woods, within which hides Château Angludet, while Château Giscours sits on the other side. The is clearly no shortage of high-quality terroir here.
The vines at Château Pouget account for just 10 hectares of the Margaux appellation in all, situated on the typically sandy gravels of the Quaternary era. The average age of the vines is 35 years, they are cultivated at a density of 10,000 vines per hectare, and they comprise 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, figures that have not changed significantly over the last few decades. As is also the case at Château Boyd-Cantenac, there has never been heavy use of chemical fertiliser or other treatments at Château Pouget. Proprietor Lucien Guillemet states that management of pests focuses on natural methods although there is no commitment to anything other than conventional means when it comes to the rest of the work in the vineyard, as might be apparent from viewing the vines (pictured).
