Château Paveil de Luze: Tasting & Drinking

While Château Paveil de Luze is one of the more peripheral châteaux in Margaux, in Soussans which is arguably the least-regarded of the five communes eligible for the appellation, it is no less peripheral than some other properties in the appellation, including some more famous names. And having walked through the vineyard I have been struck by how gravelly the soils are, gravels deposited long ago by the flow of Gironde. In modern times the waters of the estuary are 4.6 kilometres distant, but in prehistory the Gironde was broader and deeper, and it deposited multiple layers of gravel across the Médoc. Château Paveil de Luze sits on the fifth of six gravel terraces that have been identified, as do a number of classified growths. It is a credible addition to the Margaux firmament and having taste the wines over a number of years I have on occasion been impressed.
