Château Paveil de Luze: Vineyards

Château Paveil de Luze is located in the commune of Soussans, one of five communes eligible for the Margaux appellation. It is located at the extreme northern end of the appellation, and also the extreme western end. It is a ‘last gasp’ for Margaux; head west and you will find yourself in the vineyard of Château Citran, head north through the trees, across the Estey de Tayac, one of the Médoc’s major drainage channels, and the first property you are like to chance upon is Château d’Arcins. In either case you have landed in the Haut-Médoc appellation.

The château and its vineyards are set well back from the D2, the famed Route des Châteaux which runs northwards through all the famous appellations of the Médoc. You need to take a left turn at the little hamlet of Tayac in order to find it. I confess I have driven up and down this road dozens of times, maybe a hundred times or more, and it was only recently that I made that turn. I was glad that I did though; it is always worthwhile looking beyond the obvious in Bordeaux. It is a region rich in undiscovered and unrealised gems.
