Château Tour Saint-Fort: Vineyards

Château Tour Saint-Fort sits on the periphery of the village of Laujac, one of the less readily appreciated corners of the St Estèphe appellation, close to its western limit. All around the château and indeed all around the village itself, the landscape is blanketed with vines. Having said that, there are no grand châteaux in the vicinity. Château Montrose sits a full 3 kilometres to the east, overlooking the Gironde. Head west and the vineyard begins to fragment, the vines interwoven with woodland. Beyond that lies a more diverse landscape, and the châteaux of the Haut-Médoc appellation, such as Château Reysson.

The property has 14 hectares of vines, most of which are located around the château. The soils here tend to be a deeper clay than you might find further east, closer to the Gironde, where the various gravel terraces dominate the surface layers. Beneath the clay, which does have some gravelly and sandy elements in parts, there is deeper limestone, the Calcaire de St Estèphe which is the major bedrock of the region.
