Château Siran: Vineyards

Château Siran is located in the commune of Labarde, which is squeezed between Cantenac and Macau. Its nearest neighbour is Château Dauzac, which is just a short walk down the road. As the D2 runs through Labarde it means that other more southerly Margaux estates are also not too far away, including Château Giscours. The entire estate covers 88 hectares, and of this the vineyards currently in production account for 36 hectares, spread across both the Margaux and more generic appellations. The former accounts for 25 hectares, while 11 hectares are more generic, both Haut-Médoc (just 1.2 hectares) and Bordeaux (9.8 hectares). The area of Haut-Médoc vines was once larger, but several hectares were reclassified as Margaux a few years ago.

The dominant variety in the vineyards is Merlot, which accounts for 46% of the vines, with Cabernet Sauvignon a close second at 40%. Petit Verdot vines make up 13% of the vineyard, whereas just 1% is planted to Cabernet Franc. The soils are a grey-hued blend of alluvial sand and gravel, and have seen more new field drains (essential in and around Margaux) installed in 1999. Work in the vineyard is overseen by Jean-Luc Chevalier, with yields controlled (to a figure typically around 48 hl/ha) by green harvesting, and the fruit ripening is encouraged during the summer months by leaf-thinning. Work in the vineyard is generally conventional, with no certified organic or biodynamic practice.
