Château Rauzan-Ségla: Vineyards

Château Rauzan-Ségla is located in the commune of Margaux, one of five eligible for the Margaux appellation, on the south side of the village. The vineyards account for 72 hectares of the Margaux appellation. This is a significant expansion, in part accounted for by the vineyard acquisitions documented in my profile, including 1.5 hectares from Château Alesme-Becker and 8.5 hectares from Château de la Bourgade in 2008, and a further 3 hectares from Château Boston in 2010 (the remainder of the Château Boston vineyard was snapped up by the proprietors of Château Palmer).

The vineyards can be roughly divided into three sectors; the heart of the estate is a tightly-packed concentration of vineyards situated around the château, close to Château Margaux and Château Palmer. The gravels here are deep and very favourable. Further inland, there is a terrace of finer gravel soils, and the Wertheimer family own multiple parcels here, much more broadly scattered across the appellation. Thirdly, near the Gironde, there is a small parcel of vines planted on soils of shallow clay over limestone, the erosion of the estuary having exposed the ancient limestones which lie deep beneath the gravels of the left bank.
