Château Margaux: Vineyards
Château Margaux is located on the eastern periphery of the great body of vineyards that sweep around the commune of Margaux-Cantenac. To the east of the châteaux there lies only the palus and the waters of the Gironde. Gathered around the estate on the other three sides, to the north, west and south, are those most famous names which also claim a little of this gravelly terroir at the heart of the Margaux appellation. Most notable among them are Château d’Issan and Château Palmer, to the south, and Château Rauzan-Ségla, Château Marquis de Terme and Château Marojallia, to the west. One or two neighbours are less well-known, in particular Château Pontac-Lynch, which lies sandwiched between Château d’Issan and Château Margaux, but otherwise it is a roll-call of who’s who in Margaux.
Today the estate is spread over 262 hectares, with 87 hectares entitled to the Margaux appellation; of these 82 hectares are planted up, exclusively to red varieties. Meanwhile there are another 12 hectares – distant to the estate, lying inland on the plateau of Viré Fougasse in Soussans – planted to white varieties. Thus at the time of writing there are 99 hectares of vines here, most of which are gathered around the château.
