Château Malescot St-Exupéry: Vineyards

Château Malescot St-Exupéry occupies a very prominent position overlooking the D2 as it passed through the village of Margaux. The places it just down the road from Château Marquis d’Alesme (as it is known these days, the ‘Becker’ having been dropped), the other principal Zuger estate, which as I have already explained in my profile was previously known as Château Desmirail. Of course there are many other classed growth châteaux located in and around the village, most notably Château Durfort-Vivens, Château Marojallia and Château Ferrière, located on the same road, as well as Château Lascombes and Château Marquis de Terme to the west, and Château Margaux to the east.

Today the estate covers 45 hectares, of which approximately 23.5 hectares are planted to vines. The best parcels are planted with the estate’s oldest vines and are situated on soils of classic Médocian gravel which abut the vineyards of Château Margaux. In general the vineyards have a fairly typical constitution for the appellation of Margaux, with a layer of gravelly soils up to ten metres deep in places, over a layer of rock which is a mix of marl, clay and chalk, with some iron deposits.
