Château Laffitte Carcasset: Vineyards

Château Laffitte Carcasset can be found in a very central position within the St Estèphe appellation, surrounded by a sea of vines.

It sits directly to the west of Château Tronquoy, with not even 500 metres between one chai and the next. On the far side of Château Tronquoy sits Château Meyney and beyond than the Gironde. Otherwise, aside from the dirty-cream and faded terracotta facade of the Marquis de St Estèphe Cave Cooperative facility which sits close by, the nearest neighbours orbit the settlement of Pez, to the northwest, which means Château de Pez and Château Ormes de Pez, among others.

The château and cellars of Château Laffitte Carcasset sit on the cusp of a pocket of Terrace 3 gravel, which extends to the west. Some of the vines thus benefit from this benevolent terroir, while some run across the ‘valley’ between this mound of Terrace 3 gravel and that upon which Château Tronquoy sits. It is not much of a valley to speak of though, the decline barely a few metres, and walking between the two properties it is barely noticeable. Nevertheless the soils here are a little richer in clay, and less marked by gravel.

Of course, underneath this clay and gravel, just a few metres down, is the limestone bedrock which is typical of St Estèphe.
