Château Tronquoy: Vineyard

The vineyards of Château Tronquoy lie around the estate which sits on the D2E3 as it runs north towards the village of Saint-Estèphe itself. As such the property sits directly south of the village, and just inland of both Château Meyney and Château Montrose, while inland lies Château Lafitte Carcasset. It thus has an excellent position within the appellation, and it is no surprise that the soils are rich in the desirable gravelly soils of the Médoc peninsula (as is hopefully illustrated by my picture below, taken in a plot just north-east of the château). The elevation of the gravel soils reaches 23 metres above sea level, despite being just a short distance from the waters of the Gironde.

They property today accounts for 30 hectares, and while 19th-century authors described huge areas dedicated to gardens and grassland, this is certainly no longer the case. The château, new winemaking facilities and a small area of gardens planted with trees behind the residence account for 3 hectares, so the vast majority of the land is planted to vines. The vineyard is dominated by Merlot at 52% of the total, with 39% Cabernet Sauvignon (the vines pictured are all Cabernet).
