Château Haut-Batailley: Vineyards
The vineyards of Château Haut-Batailley lie to the east of the D206, which runs southwest out of Pauillac. For the appellation in question this is quite peripheral; the boundary with St Julien is located just a few hundred metres south of the château. Unsurprisingly, the estate’s nearest neighbour is Château Batailley itself, which lies just around the corner from Château Haut-Batailley, on the aforementioned D206.
Most of the vineyards, which also include those around Château Couronne, a petit château which came to François Borie in 1932, sit around the château. Of note, just to the east is the Petit-Batailley vineyard which belongs to Château Latour, which is largely utilised for that estate’s second wine, Les Forts de Latour. A few parcels lie more distant though. A couple of plots lie just to the east, beyond the Latour vines, abutting vineyards belonging to Château Latour and Château Pichon-Lalande. But there are other parcels, more than a dozen separate plots, located just to the northeast, just to the west of Saint Lambert. Here the vines sit next to other plots belonging to Château Lynch-Bages (so it will be interesting to see what happens to these now both estates are under the direction of the Cazes family), Château Pichon-Baron and Château Croizet-Bages.
