Loire 2010: Anjou in 2013
Following on from my recent Loire 2011 update, I present here some tasting notes on the 2010 vintage which were also made at the 2013 instalment of the annual Loire Benchmark Tasting. Although the majority of the wines on the day were from the 2012 and 2011 vintages, there were a handful of wines from 2010, all from the Anjou appellations, with a tendency towards the sweet wines of the Coteaux du Layon, Quarts de Chaume and Bonnezeaux.
Although as a ‘vintage update’ the information is sparse, I thought I should file these notes here, under my previous Loire 2010 reports. I thought this would simply be a good way to store the notes in a logical place, tagged on to previous 2010 tastings, linked in the menu on the left. Nevertheless, on reflection, I appreciate that it gives the impression I regard a tasting of a handful of wines as a valid ‘vintage review’. That certainly isn’t the case, so I hope you will read what is presented with that in mind.
The tasted notes presented below are, as I have indicated above, purely from the leading appellations of Anjou, and so I will look at only this region here. The vintage was one which, on paper at least, would seem to have been very favourable. There was warm weather through much of the summer, with little rain in April, May and July, and those rains that did arrive tended to be in short, sharp bursts, often associated with thunderstorms.
