Domaine du Haut Bourg, 2021 Update
Muscadet Sèvre et Maine receives the lion’s share of attention when it comes to the wines of the Nantais, but I learnt many years ago that it is worth looking beyond the banks of the Sèvre and the Maine for your next Muscadet fix. I suggest anyone seeking to break new ground in this region should head south-west, down to the vineyards of Muscadet Côtes de Grandlieu. This appellation, only codified as recently as 1994, is home to a number of leading vignerons prominent among which are two branches of the Choblet family, Jérémie Choblet at Domaine des Herbauges, and his cousins Nicolas and Hervé Choblet here at Domaine du Haut Bourg.
I have been following both domaines for some years now. A month or two ago I published notes on a tasting of the 2020 vintage from Domaine des Herbauges (although it was before my recent Bordeaux 2020 reports, so it already feels more it was about twenty years ago). Here it is the turn of Nicolas and Hervé, of Domaine du Haut Bourg, to showcase their most recent releases.
