Jean-Marc Biet: Vineyards

The domaine is located in the commune of Seigy, on the south bank of the Cher. Jean-Marc helpfully points out that they are located not far from the Zoo de Beauval, although I would rather put the domaine in the context of the geological landscape and its neighbours. Seigy sits on the south bank of the Cher, as it flows from the Quincy and Reuilly appellations down towards Chenonceaux and its eventual union with the Loire at Tours. This places it firmly on the broadly limestone bedrock of the Bassin Parisien, although clearly the superficial soils vary considerably. There is no famous appellation covering these vineyards, the wines generally sold as Touraine, but there are some very well-known neighbours which may speak a little of the domaine’s potential. It is only a short distance downstream that we find the old domaine of Clos Roche Blanche, still home to Catherine Roussel and Didier Barrouillet even though they have since disposed of all their vineyards. And close by is Noëlla Morantin, whose beginnings were of course associated with Clos Roche Blanche.

Today Jean-Marc Biet has 24 hectares of vines in total, planted with a selection of traditional varieties, including Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Gamay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc and Côt. Some of the vines date back to his grandfather’s time, including some particularly old Pinot Noir.
