Château Moulin Saint-Georges: Vineyards
Château Moulin Saint-Georges is located directly on the road running up towards the town of St Emilion, directly opposite the estate of Château Ausone, although this other Vauthier estate is located much higher up on the edge of plateau of course, while Château Moulin Saint-Georges sits well down in the dip of the valley. It sits on the western edge of the Côte de Pavie, which of course runs east-west but which curves round and runs up towards St Emilion here at its western end. Thus up the slope, behind Château Moulin Saint-Georges sits Château Pavie-Decesse, and below that on the south-facing side of the slope there is Château Pavie itself. Just to the south of Château Moulin Saint-Georges, as already mentioned, is Château Saint Georges Côte Pavie and Château La Gaffelière.
The vineyard covers approximately 7 hectares of the St Emilion appellation, and as my description of the domaine’s location should suggest the vines are located on slopes which face southwest and west, and the soil underfoot is entirely clay over limestone. The vines are 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc; there was some Petit Verdot planted here during the 1990s, but I believe this was pulled up. The planting density is very high, up to 12,600 vines per hectare in parts, as it is on other Vauthier properties. The work in the vineyard is meticulous but conventional; the vines stand out for their immaculate presentation, which is nothing unusual for the Vauthier vineyards.
