A Visit to Domaine Bernard Baudry: Recent Vintages
At this point Matthieu Baudry and I began a marathon round-robin tasting. In truth we only tasted fourteen wines, but tasting in both cuvée– and vintage-order meant we went from tasting room (for wines already in bottle), to cuverie (for wines in vat), to the humid cave, with its mould-encrusted walls (for wines in barrel), before repeating the circuit for the next vintage, before we ended up in the tasting room once again. I was ready for a rest at the end of it all.
On the 2015 vintage, Matthieu (pictured) has this to say.
“The summer was too dry, but the rain later really helped. These later rains weren’t too heavy, and it came regularly, bringing the vines back to life. It helped to soften the tannins in the skins, and helped the fruit to soften and ripen overall. It was like 2011, but in 2011 we didn’t have the rain to help us. It makes it a better vintage.”
