Les Vignerons du Pallet: Vineyards

As I have already indicated in my introduction, the village of Le Pallet is located in the Sèvre et Maine region, to the south-east of Nantes. The commune and vineyards of Le Pallet lie at an altitude of about 32 metres above sea level, on the northern bank of the Sèvre as it flows roughly westwards towards its union with the Maine. They are surrounded by the famous names of the Muscadet Sèvre et Maine district; Saint-Fiacre-sur-Maine and Château-Thébaud can be found a short distance to the west, the aforementioned Gorges and Clisson – the other crus ratified at the same time as Le Pallet – to the south, and Vallet to the north-east.

The growers who contribute fruit to Les Vignerons du Pallet lie dotted around the appellation; all-told they own over 170 hectares, more than one-third of the Le Pallet vineyard. Of these, only 20 hectares are eligible to feed into the Le Pallet cru though. As an aside, the distinction between Le Pallet, the village, with a vineyard of 500 hectares and Le Pallet, the cru, with about 20 hectares is naturally confusing; note that Le Pallet on a label will always indicate the wine meets all the cru communal standards, as the village name is not eligible to be used in any other way.
