Bertrand Sourdais’ modus operandi is not unique in the world of wine; Peter Sisseck, for example, is another that divides his time between his estates in France (in St Emilion, in his case) and in Spain. But it is distinctive, particularly in the Loire Valley where, only a generation ago, a trip to the next village downriver was considered foreign travel.

But times have changed. Many young vignerons now find themselves working a stage not just in Burgundy or Bordeaux before they take over the running of the family domaine, but in South Africa (especially where Chenin is concerned), New Zealand or California. Bertrand embodies that entirely, so much so that he not only did he cut his teeth in Spain, he remains involved there to this day.
